La Jolla Playhouse is helmed by two-time Tony Award-winning Artistic Director Des McAnuff, Managing Director Steven B. Libman, Associate Artistic Director Shirley Fishman, and a Board of Trustees.

La Jolla Playhouse is situated on the University of California San Diego Campus, just minutes from I-5. Performances take place in three theatres, each within view and a short walk from each other. The Mandell Weiss Theatre, the largest of the theatres, is a proscenium stage. The Mandell Weiss Forum is a thrust stage. The new Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre, opened in February, 2005, is a black-box theatre located in the new Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse.

In addition to producing 6 mainstage productions each season, La Jolla Playhouse presents Page to Stage readings and workshops, tours to schools with an annual production, offers recreational acting classes in partnership with UCSD Extension Division and offers summer programs for young people.

From Broadway to Moscow, a long list of the Playhouse’s productions have gone on to stages around the world. These include Roger Miller and William Hauptman’s Big River, The Who’s Tommy, Lee Blessing’s A Walk in the Woods, Matthew Broderick in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Tony Kushner’s Slavs!, Lifegame, Lisa Kron’s 2.5 Minute Ride, Jessica Hagedorn’s Dogeaters, Randy Newman’s Faust, the West Coast premiere of Rent, the American premiere of Jane Eyre and the world premiere Thoroughly Modern Millie.

La Jolla Playhouse was founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, and revived in 1983 under the leadership of Des McAnuff, who served as Artistic Director from 1983 to 1994. McAnuff was succeeded by Michael Greif, who served as Artistic Director from 1995 to 1999.

The theatre is currently led by Artistic Director Des McAnuff; Managing Director Steven Libman and Associate Artistic Director Shirley Fishman. 

The Playhouse is a not-for-profit, professional theatre in residence on the magnificent campus of the University of California, San Diego. La Jolla Playhouse is located on the corner of La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla, California.
